Here's an excerpt from an article that was posted April 3rd, 2005

1. Make sure you have have something to read on your website.

What? Something to read, you might ask.
What about all of those cool special effects and bouncing images?

Search engines don't have eyes and can only index text and follow links.

2. Have links that a search engine can follow. Using images as links will be overlooked. Using links with nice JavaScript effects will also be overlooked by search engines.

3. Key words and a description in your code is not enough. In fact, they are rated about a 3 on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being most important. However, be sure your written text content is relevant to your keywords. Help it strengthen your keywords and have your keywords in the text either before or after a link to another page, or both.

4. Use a descriptive an unique title tag for each page that has a t least one or two key words. The title tag is rated highly by most all search engines.

5. Use header tags in the body of your web page (in their proper order:h1, h2, h3, etc) instead of just p or div or td for headlines and blocks of text. Search engines see header tags as important, and if used correctly with a few keywords, it can help push your rankings.

These are only 5 primers to get started and each can be explored in depth. But remember, you are not only designing a web page for search engines but also your target audience.
