Choosing a new domain name can be an overwhelming task. You might start to think about all the many things to consider.

"Will people remember it?"

"Does it sound good?"

"My business name is already taken!"

And so on.

Everyone that has registered a domain name has wanted to get it right. But it isn't always that easy. So, you have to do the best you can. Here are a few things to consider when choosing a domain name.

7 Principles When Choosing a Domain Name

  • Keep it short.
  • Avoid hyphenation, if possible. If you can not avoid using a hyphen, use no more than one.
  • Don't invent a new word. Google and Yahoo! got away with it. Can you? Is "Webworks" a new name?
  • Your domain name should also be your site name. For example, "Maine Webworks" is "www.mainewebworks.com."
  • Use a dot com (.com), if possible. If .com isn't available, try .net, .us, and then .biz.
  • Don't use a geographic location in your domain name. An exception is if your business name includes a geographic location. Otherwise, you might be limiting yourself on the web.
  • Last and most important. Test it! Ask friends, family, and strangers if they like the name.

Recommended Web Hosting Providers

Maine Webworks favorite web hosting providers are An Hosting and midPhase hosting because they have professional and courteous service. An Hosting and midPhase offer 24/7/365 support, a toll-free phone number and have been in service since 2003.
